IBS was officially operated in 2004, based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 37 / D / O / 2003. The establishment is a development of the Indonesian Banking Development Institute (LPPI), a non-profit institution that provides services to banks and the public in forming professional bankers. Historically, LPPI has played a role for more than 50 years, since it was founded in the 1950s. The name and activities of this institution had undergone several changes, starting with the Bank Academy, Higher Education in Finance, especially Banking (PTIKP), the Indonesian Banking Development Institute (LPPI) and the Indonesian Bankers Institute (IBI). However, since 2004 the institution has carried out its activities under the name LPPI again.
In 2008, BAN-PT as the official institution for accreditation assessment, gave the value “B” and in 2016 had the same accreditation value. The value of accreditation is obtained for the Undergraduate (S1) study program both Accounting Study Program and Management Study Program. It was officially licensed for the two study programs in the specificity of the banking sector.
In September 2008 for the first time IBS successfully graduated as many as 59 undergraduate students. Until now, IBS has graduated as many as 1,399 undergraduate students (one thousand three hundred ninety nine). In 2013 MM study program received B accreditation from BAN-PT. Until now, MM study program has graduated 168 (one hundred sixty eight) people. Most of the students at MM were bank employees, including Bank Indonesia, Bank Mandiri Syariah, Panin Syariah, Bank BRI, BRI Syariah, Bank Bukopin, Bank DKI, Exim Bank, Bank Capital, Citibank, Bank BNI, Bank BTN.
In 2016 based on the decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education No. 403 / KPT / I / 2016 in 2016, IBS has obtained permission to hold an undergraduate program in Islamic Finance and Banking Management.

Since 2014 until now, the Accounting study program, Management study program, Financial Management and Islamic Banking study program, as well as MM are being upgraded in terms of its activities and governance. Improvement in all these fields aims to get a re-accreditation with an A value from BAN-PT. Various efforts that are being carried out are also expected to be able to make the A accreditation value institutionally.
